Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS4918601
Kind Code:
B1
Abstract:
1326630 Sweetening hydrocarbons by adsorption UNION CARBIDE CORP 14 Oct 1970 [15 Oct 1969] 48725/70 Heading C5E In a process for removing sulphur-containing compounds from a sour hydrocarbon stream by preferentially adsorbing the sulphur-containing compounds from the liquid phase on to a crystalline zeolitic molecular sieve, the zeolitic adsorbent is regenerated with a water-containing purge gas stream to leave 2 to 5 wt. % water on the regenerated adsorbent. Suitable feeds are those resulting from the destructive hydrogenation of coal, L.P.G., natural gasolines and other petroleum fractions boiling between - 44‹ and 180‹ F. and mostly comprising C 3 to C 6 hydrocarbons, and olefin-containing streams and contain sulphur as hydrogen sulphide, aliphatic and aromatic mercaptans, thiophene, 1,2-dithiol and carbonyl sulphide. Suitable adsorbents are mordenite, chabazite, erionite, faujasite and zeolites X, Y, L and # which can be tableted or pelletized, e.g. with a clay or alkali metal silicate binder. The sulphur compounds are adsorbed from a downwardly flowing liquid stream on to zeolitic adsorbent in one of two swing reactors at a liquid superficial linear velocity of 0.1-20 f.p.m. The adsorbent is regenrated with a hot purge gas, e.g. at 450- 700‹ F. and 15-100 p.s.i.a., containing moisture at a dew point of 10-160‹ F., e.g. methane, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide or an oxygen-free mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen from the combustion of air and methane, or with a steam purge at 212-400‹ F. followed by drying the adsorbent to 2-5 wt. per cent water, e.g. with nitrogen, hydrogen or natural gas.
