Abstract:
Novel compounds of the formula in which R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an acyl group and R2 represents a hydrogen atom or a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group containing up to 4 carbon atoms, are obtained in a process wherein a compound of the formula in which R represents a hydrogen atom or an acyl group, is reduced with the elimination of the oxygen atom in the 3-position and, if desired, in the resulting product any free hydroxyl group is esterified with an acid or with a reactive derivative thereof, or any acyloxy group is hydrolysed and, if desired, the liberated hydroxyl group is re-esterified and/or, if desired, a 17b -hydroxyl-17a -H grouping is converted into the 17b -OR1-17a -R2 grouping in which R2 represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon group. Pharmaceutical compositions having anabolic activity and ovulation inhibitory activity are administered by intramuscular injection or orally.
