1309652 4-Oxosteroids F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 2 April 1970 [4 April 1969] 29521/72 Divided out of 1309651 Heading C2C The invention comprises d-, l- and dl-compounds of formula (wherein M is the remainder of the D-ring of the steroid, R1 is C 1-5 primary alkyl, and R2 , R3 and R5 are each H or C 1-7 alkyl); their preparation by the action of heat and/or acid on compounds of formula (wherein R6 is H, acyl, monocyclic aryl-C 1-7 alkyl, or -CR7 R8 R9 where R7 , R8 and R9 are each C 1-7 alkyl); and a process for hydrogenating compounds of Formula IV using a noble metal catalyst in the presence of a base to yield compounds of formula dl - 3 - t - Butoxy - 4,5 - secoestr - 9 - ene - 5,17- dione (X) [#"() - 6 - (3 - t - butoxybutyl)- 3a# - methyl - 4,5,8,9,9a,9b - hexahydro - 1H- benz[e]inden - 3,7(2H,3aH) - dione"] is prepared from dl - 2 - (2 - diethylaminoethyl) - 6- (4 - t - butoxypentyl) - tetrahydropyran - 2 - ol (XI) and 2 - methylcyclopentane - 1,3 - dione (XII) by the sequence: XI + XII -# dl- 3 - (4 - t - butoxypentyl) - 6a# - methyl - 2,3,5,6, 6a,8 - hexdhydrocyclopenta[f][1]benzopyran- 7- (1H) - one -# dl - 3 - (4 - t - butoxypentyl)- 6a# - methyl - 1,2,3,5,6,6a,7,8 - octahydrocyclopenta[f][1]benzopyran - 7# - ol -# dl - 3 - (4- t - butoxypentyl) - 6a# - methyl - 1,2,3,5,6,6a,7,8,9, 9a - decahydrocyclopenta[f][1]benzopyran- 7#- ol -# dl - 3 - (4 - t - butoxypentyl - 6a# - methylperhydrocyclopenta[f][1]benzopyran- 4a,7# - diol -# dl - 3a,7a - trans 4 - (3 - oxo - 7 - t - butoxyoctyl) - 7a# - methyl - perhydroindan - 1,5- dione -# X (Example 3). Compound XI is prepared as described in Specification 1,207,047. dl - 3 - t - Butoxy - 13# - ethyl - 4,5 - secogon- 9 - ene - 5,17 - dione[#"() - 10 - (3 - t - butoxybutyl) - 18 - methyl - 19 - nor - desA - androst- 9 - ene - 5,17 - dione"] and antecedents thereof (Example 1) are prepared as described in Specification 1,207,047.
