Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS4939484
Kind Code:
B1
Abstract:
A method of lubricating the cylinders of engines with separate cylinder and crank-shaft lubrication which comprises supplying to the cylinders a lubricating oil composition which in addition to a lubricating oil or a mixture of lubricating oils, and a dispersed salt and/or hydroxide of an alkaline earth metal, also contains at least one oil-soluble polymer without polar groups and which has been prepared by polymerization of at least one olefinically unsaturated compound. The base oil may be a distillate or residue, or a mixture thereof; the salt or hydroxide may be of calcium, strontium, barium or magnesium, carbonates and carboxylates being preferred, and an alkaline earth carboxylate, e.g. a naphthenate or sulphonate, may be added as stabilizer. The polymer may be a homo- or co-polymer of a mono- or di-olefin, vinyl or allyl ester, vinyl ether, or unsaturated ester; or a polymer of a polar compound subsequently treated to eliminate polar groups, e.g. a polymer containing acid units which are subsequently esterified, or one containing hydroxy groups which are subsequently esterified. Non-polar polymers may also have an after-treatment provided that that this does not introduce any polar groups.
