Abstract:
An esterification reactor comprises a vertical column having inlets in the upper portion for liquid reactants, an outlet in the lower portion for the ester, an outlet for vapour from the upper portion, a heater surrounding the column, and containing inert bodies of sufficient surface area to provide a static hold up of at least 25% of the reactants therein. As illustrated in the figure (not shown) dimethyl terephthalate together with catalysts and modifying agents are fed to melt tank 10 where they are mixed and heated and then passed to feed tank 22 also equipped with a stirrer and heating means. The thus prepared first reactant is passed to reactor 36 and ethylene glycol is passed separately thereto from reservoir 30 via heater 34. The reactor shown has a heating jacket 42 which may be replaced by electric resistance heating. Methanol is recovered in condenser 46 and the transesterified product, bis-(hydroxyethyl) terephthalate, is passed by line 58 to the prepolymerizer 52 of the kind claimed in Specification 1,039,232 [Also in Division B1].
