1422822 Esters from cyclohexanone waste ERZ & STAHL AG 22 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 29798/73 Heading C2C Esters of adipic, #-hydroxycaproic acid and other mono- and di-carboxylic acids are prepared from waste salt solution from the manufacture of cyclohexanone by the oxidation of cyclohexane, by acidifying the aqueous alkali metal salt solution to form an aqueous phase and an organic phase; separating, removing the water from the organic phase by distillation; esterifying with an alcohol (1-6C); fractionally distilling to give a final fraction containing adipic and #-hydroxycaproic acid esters and separating the #-hydroxycaproic ester by water extraction. The salts may be sodium salts and are acidified by strong mineral acid, e.g. sulphuric acid. The final refining of the esterification mixture may be by neutralization, e.g. with methanolic caustic potash followed by distillation under vacuum, and fractionation of the distillate, or by extraction with water followed by neutralization with aqueous caustic soda, followed by distillation and extraction of the aqueous zone.
