Abstract:
1282929 Synthetic drying oil compositions CHEMISCHE WERKE HULS AG 16 Dec 1969 [17 Dec 1968] 61183/69 Heading C3P [Also in Division C4] The invention comprises air and oven drying coating compositions comprising (A) 30 to 90% by weight of water with or without other watermiscible solvents and (B) 70 to 10% by weight of one or more adducts, at least partly neutralized with ammonia or one or more amines, of one or more drying or semi-drying oils and one or more ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids having a double bond in the alpha position to at least one of the carboxyl groups, or an anhydride thereof, wherein the one or more adducts in (B) comprises (C) 100 to 30% by weight of an adduct of 80 to 95% by weight of a liquid butadiene homopolymer at least 95% polymerized in cis-1,4-configurations and containing more than 50% of cis-1,4 double bonds and a viscosity of 30 to 30,000 centipoises at 50‹ C., and 20 to 5% by weight of one or more ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids as specified above or an anhydride thereof, and (2) 0 to 70% by weight of an adduct of 80 to 93% by weight of one or more natural drying or semidrying oils and 20 to 7% by weight of one or more ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids as specified above or an anhydride thereof. In the examples low molecular weight polybutadienes are adducted with maleic anhydride and mixed with in varying proportions with adducts of linseed oil or tung oil and maleic anhydride, to form compositions which are neutralized with amines such as N,N-dimethylamino ethanol, and triethylamine and mixed with water. Some of the compositions (Examples 1-9) contain only maleinized polybutadiene, neutralized with one of the-above amines. In Examples 17 to 28 the compositions are made by maleinizing polybutadiene and linseed oil simultaneously in a mixture, and then neutralizing and mixing with water.
