Abstract:
1,273,514. Mixing apparatus; polycondensation apparatus. BAKER PERKINS Inc. 27 Oct., 1970 [30 Oct., 1969], No. 50983/70. Headings B1C and B1X. Apparatus for poly condensation and other reactions, evaporating and mixing comprises co-rotatable shafts 18, 19 having feeding screws 37, 38 and axial paddles 39, 40 both of lobed (as shown, lenticular) cross-section, wiping each other and the walls of .the chamber, a material inlet 36 and a vacuum connection 41 the cross-section of which is equal to the free cross-sectional area of the chamber. The chamber has a heating section 16 and a cooling section 16'. The inlet is fed with material at such a rate that the chamber is only about 30% full; it discharges past an adjustable dam 48, Fig. 5, to intermeshing discharge screws 42, 43. In operation axially extending cylindrical rolls of material (see Fig. 3) are formed, sheared and smeared by the paddles, and reformed. In modifications the paddles may have three or more lobes; and a second mixing stage and dam may be inserted between the first and the discharge screws.
