Abstract:
A process for producing ferrochromium with a carbon content of 8-10%, a sulphur content below 0.015% and a silicon content below 2% comprises smelting a mixture of chrome ore, carbon and slag forming material to give a slag having a molar ratio of CaO+MgO to SiO2 of 2.5-8.5 to 1, a molar ratio of CaO to SiO2 greater than 0.75 and having a viscosity of 25 poise at a temperature of at least 1575 DEG C., the ferrochromium produced being at least 95% in the form of (Fe,Cr)7C3. The slag forming material is within the following ranges:- .CaO.13-35% .MgO.22-35% .Al2O3.25-42% .SiO2.9-28%
