Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5019600
Kind Code:
B1
Abstract:
Thermoplastic condensation polymers are prepared by feeding the viscous starting materials or solutions thereof into a heated tube, along the inner wall of which they are moved by a worm conveyer, to the exit point, where the product is withdrawn, the loading of the tube being adjusted so that the central part of the tube is left free to conduct away volatile reaction products and possibly solvent vapours. The worm conveyer may also be heated, and the heated tube may be maintained under reduced pressure. Suitable subjects for this process are polyamides and polyesters, including polycarbonates and polyesteramides. Instead of monomeric starting materials low molecular weight precondensates may be used. In examples precondensates from (1) diphenyl carbonate and bisphenol A, and (2) terephthalic acid bis-(hydroxyethyl) ester, are passed into a tube of 100 mm. diameter and 600 mm. long at rates of 5.0 and 1.8 kg./hr., at 270-300 DEG C. and 270-280 DEG C. and at worm speeds of 20 and 40 r.p.m., to give mean residence times of 8-10 and 8 minutes respectively, under 1 mm. Hg. pressure. Fig. 2 describes a suitable form of apparatus wherein the worm (2), rotated by a drive (3), conveys material along the heated tube (1) from the entry (4) to the exit (5) where the product is removing by a geared pump or another worm (7), any volatile material being exhausted through a pipe (8).
