Japanese Patent JPS506454
Kind Code:
B1
Abstract:
1294888 Polyurethanes ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO 1 Dec 1969 [3 Dec 1968] 58566/69 Headings C3C and C3R [Also in Division C2] Polyurethanes suitably having a weight aver- age molecular weight of at least 150,000, are prepared by condensation of a polyhydroxyl organic compound with a cyclic nitrile carbonate having the formula wherein R is an organic radical which consists essentially of carbon and hydrogen and is free of reactive hydrogens as determined by the Zerewitinoff test and n is 2, 3 or 4, in the presence of a catalyst combination of (I) a first metal selected from the metals of Groups III to V of the Periodic Table and (II) a second metal selected from the metals of Groups I, II and the iron series of Group VIII of the Periodic Table, the first and second metals being present in non- elemental forms. The polyhydroxyl compound is suitably a polyether or polyester polyol. Suitable cyclic nitrile carbonates are butane-1,4-di- (nitrile carbonate) and benzene-1,4-di-(nitrile carbonate). The catalyst combination may comprise a bi-metallic compound of the two catalytic metals and may be a salt of the formula Mc+(MaX)-, wherein Ma is the Group III to V metal, Mc is the Group I, II or iron series metal and X is a component which is capable of entering into an interchange reaction with the hydroxyl compound. Preferably X in the above formula is at least partly supplied by -OR groups, R being alkyl, aryl, mixed alkyl-aryl, polyether, polyester or hydrogen. Cellular polyurethanes may be prepared by controlling the reaction to preclude escape of the evolved CO 2 before gelation. Conventional foaming agents may also be added. Numerous examples are given. In a typical example a solution of sodium tertiary butoxide was added to poly- (tetramethylene ether) glycol, followed by dibutyltin oxide and finally butane-1,4-di-(nitrile carbonate).
