1494013 Liquid crystal display devices JAPAN SUNCRUX CO Ltd 17 Oct 1975 [15 Nov 1974] 42764/75 Heading G2F A liquid crystal display device comprises a twisted nematic liquid crystal cell 51, Fig. 5, including a pair of transparent substrates 51b, 51c each carrying, on the inner surface thereof, electrodes in the form of a display pattern, and a liquid crystal material 5 1a having a positive dielectric anisotropy sandwiched between said substrates, an electric circuit connected to the electrodes for applying an electric field across the liquid crystal cell, and a pair of linear polarizers such as 52, disposed one adjacent each one of said substrates, at least one of said polarizers being supported in a cassette 53 which is demountably fixed to the liquid crystal cell. The cassette comprises a pair of rigid support plates 12, 13, Fig. 1, having flat inner surfaces between which a linear polarizer is interposed. The plates have a circular, oval, or square opening to expose the central part of the polarizer or they may be made of transparent material the plates being adhered to the surfaces of the polarizer or held together therewith by grip members. The cassette is held in a casing which may, as at 50, be integrally formed with a holder for the liquid crystal cell. When only one of the linear polarizers is supported in a cassette, the other polarizer may be adhered to the liquid crystal cell. The cassette may include an achromatic linear polarizer or a coloured linear polarizer.
