Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5229350
Kind Code:
B1
Abstract:
1328009 Thermosetting polymer composition FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 19 Nov 1971 [1 March 1971] 53925/71 Heading C3P A non-aqueous dispersion of a film-forming polymer is prepared by copolymerizing (a) a monomer containing an epoxide, hydroxyl or amino group with (b) at least one monomer not containing such a group to form a second copolymer having no methylolated amide groups, in the presence of a first copolymer, which is a methylolated or alkoxymethylated copolymer of an amide of an unsaturated carboxylic acid with at least one other monomer, in a liquid medium in which the second copolymer is insoluble and the first is soluble. Preferably the first copolymer is prepared and methylolated in a suitable solvent, e.g. an aromatic or alcoholic compound, then a major proportion of a non- solvent such as naphtha is added before the second polymerization. The dispersion may be coated on to a substrate, dried and cured by heating to cause reaction between the active groups of the two polymers; curing may be accelerated by adding an organic metal salt or by incorporating up to 5% by weight of a carboxyl-containing monomer is one or both of the polymers. Additional polymers, such as alkylated melaime-formaldehyde resins, may also be added to the dispersion. In examples the first copolymer is obtained by reacting a 2-ethylhexyl acrylate/acrylamide/acrylic acid copolymer with formaldehyde and butanol and the second copolymer is derived from styrene, butyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, and hydroxypropyl methacrylate or 2,3-epoxypropyl methacrylate.
