Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5321887
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
Aqs. dispersions for electrodeposition of resins on an electrically conducting substrate are prepd. by polymsn. of a mixt. of (A) a diene and (B) an at least partly neutralised reaction prod. from (1) an unsatd. carboxylic acid or anhydride and (2) a drying oil or polybutadiene. The copolymer is prepd. in aqs. medium in the presence of an oil-sol. free radical catalyst. It is used for surface coating of metals, or other materials e.g. glass or plastics to which an electrically conducting coating has previously been applied. Previous electrodeposited coatings, e.g. those of US 3511816 had poor adhesion, were not uniformly deposited and were not very corrosion resistant. Those of the invention have an unexpectedly good bath stability, combined with good adhesion and good corrosion resistance. H2O is the only solvent and wt. loss on curing is 5%. In an example 71.3 pts. wt. of an epoxy fatty acid ester (prepd. from Epon 828, Shell Chem. Co. and Pamolyn 200 fatty acid mixt. ex Hercules Inc.), 110.2 pts. wt. de-ionised H2O, 25.7 pts. wt. styrene, catalysts and stabiliser etc. were reacted with 60 pts. wt. 1,3-butadiene for 10 h. at 73 degrees C and 2.1 kg/cm2 press. The prod. diluted to 20% solids was applied to steel sheets for 4 mins. at 400 V and gave a smooth 25.4 mu thick coating.
