Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS5633240
Kind Code:
B2
Abstract:
1436778 Cutting apparatus EASTMAN KODAK CO 19 Sept 1973 [20 Sept 1972] 43947/73 Heading B4B [Also in Division G2] A method of removing an imperfect portion from a continuous web comprises transporting the web along a first path and severing it on one side of the imperfect portion to form a first web end portion, transporting that part of the web containing the imperfect portion along a second path and severing it on the other side of the imperfect portion to form a second web end portion and returning the web in the second path to the first path so that the two web ends can be spliced together. In the apparatus for carrying out the method rollers 12 transport the web 10 along the first path defined by a trap door 20 and bed 40. A blade 30 mounted in a pivotable holder 26 is moved clockwise and co-operates with a stationary blade 16 to sever the web on one side of the imperfect portion, leaving a web end 15. The holder 26 also carries a lever 54 having a hook 52 and shoulder 64. The hook engages with a spring finger 56 on the trap door 20 and as the holder pivots clockwise the lever moves down allowing the trap door to fall under its own weight until it engages a resiliently mounted roller 60 so that after the web is severed that part of the web having the imperfect portion is guided between blade 16 and a second stationary blade 18. The web is transported until the imperfect portion is fully received in the channel, blade 32 is then fully depressed to sever the web leaving a web end 22. At this stage the hook 52 is completely disengaged from the finger 56. As the holder 26 is raised the shoulder 64 of the lever engages the finger 56, raising up the trap door which in turn lifts the severed web portion so that the ends 15, 22 overlap in the first path ready for splicing by the ultrasonic horn 24. The holder 26 is operated by an air cylinder 36 and the blade 32 may be moved rapidly past blade 18 while the imperfect portion is being transported through the channel to sever this portion into small units.
