Abstract:

PURPOSE: To purify manganese type superoxide dismutase, useful as an anti- inflammatory agent, and produced by a microorganism belonging to the genus Serratia, efficiently, by subjecting a solution containing the superoxide dismutase to the affinity chromatography.

CONSTITUTION: A microorganism, belonging to the genus Serratia, and having the ability to produce manganese type superoxide dismutase (hereinafter abbreviated to serratia SOD), e.g. Serratia liquefaciens IFO12979, is cultivated in a nutrient culture medium to produce and accumulate the serratia SOD. A carrier for the affinity chromatography obtained by binding a dye compound of the formula to a crosslinkable carrier, e.g. a polysaccharide, is packed in a column, and the serratia SOD obtained by the cultivation method is passed through the column to adsorb the serratia SOD in the carrier. The adsorbed serratia SOD is then eluted with an eluent to give the aimed serratia SOD of high purity.
