NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formulaI[X and Y are 1W9C alkyl, 1W9C alkoxy, group of formula II, formula III (R1 is H, halogen, etc.), etc.; provided that at least one of X and Y is not methyl].
EXAMPLE: 3,6-Bis-(p-n-propyloxyphenyl)-phthalonitrile.
USE: A liquid crystal composition. When the phthalonitrile derivative of formula Iis molten in the state of liquid crystal, it exhibits a large negative dielectric anisotropy of about -20.
PROCESS: The compound of formulaIcan be prepared either by reacting the butadiene derivative of formula V with the fumaronitrile of formula VIII, and oxidizing the resultant compound of formula VI with sulfur, or by brominating the compound of formula V in a solvent such as acetic acid and dehydrobrominating the product, or by reacting the compound of formula V with dicyanoacetylene of formula IX to obtain the compound of formula VII, and reacting the compound in the same manner as the formula VI.
