PURPOSE: To concentrate and separate an electrolyte, by a method wherein an anode chamber and a cathode chamber are partitioned by a porous diaphragm and DC voltage is applied between electrodes to permeate only water of an aqueous electrolyte solution substantially through the diaphragm by electro-osmosis.
CONSTITUTION: When an aqueous solution containing an electrolyte such as a negatively charged dye enters an anode chamber and DC voltage is applied between both electrodes, water is moved to a cathode chamber and, on the other hand, the above described electrolyte is stayed in the anode chamber and, therefore, the aqueous dye solution can be concentrated only by electrical action. On the contrary, when the aqueous electrolyte solution contains positively charged protein, if said electrolyte solution is introduced into a cathode chamber and voltage is applied, water is moved to the anode chamber and protein is concentrated and separated in the cathode chamber. As the porous diaphragm, in addition to a polytetrafluoroethylene porous membrane, paper, a fabric a non-woven fabric, a porous sintered body, an unglazed plate, a foamed resin or a porous membrane are preferably used.
