PURPOSE: To provide sufficient durability against contact wear with a head, by coating a flexible base coated with continuous thin film of magnetic iron oxide, with a hard nonmagnetic substance oscide film.
CONSTITUTION: One of both sides of a flexible base 1 such as polyester and polyimide are coated with a continuous thin film 3 made of magnetic iron oxide consisting essentially of γ-Fe2O3, Fe3O4 or an intermediate composition of the two, and Al2O3 or SiO2 is processed with sputtering or electron beam vapor- deposition on the film 3, to form a hard nonmagnetic substance oxide film 4. Thus, a magnetic recording medium without increase in dropout and reduction in reproduced output can be obtained even for repetitive use while bringing into contact with the head.
