PURPOSE: To provide a new 1-alkoxyhexatriene-2-carboxylate useful as a preventive against harmful organisms.
CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I, e.g. methyl 1-methoxy-3-methyl-6-(3- chlorophenyl)hexatriene-2-carboxylate, is obtained by allowing a methoxymethylene carboxylate compound of formula II (R1 is an alkyl) to react with a benzaldehyde of formula III. In the formula I, R is a phenyl substituted with such a proper substituting group as a halogen, CN, NO2, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylsulfinyl, alkylsulfonyl, alkoxycarbonyl, substitutable aralkyl, substitutable aryl, etc., provided that such compounds as those in which R is 4-methoxyphenyl, 3-methoxyphenyl, 4-chloro-3- methoxyphenyl, 2-(3-methyl-buten-1-yl-oxy)-phenyl, and 3-(3-methyl-buten-1-yl-oxy)- phenyl are excluded.
