Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain 1,1,2,2-tetramethylpropyl peroxy ester compound, represented by a specific formula, useful as a polymerization initiator for vinylic monomers and capable of maintaining the rate of polymerizing reaction at a high level and providing a high-quality vinylic polymer excellent in colorability and sanitary properties.
CONSTITUTION: This compound of formula I (R1 to R3 are each a 1-9C straight- chain alkyl), e.g. 1,1,2,2-tetramethylpropyl peroxypivalate. Furthermore, the objective compound is preferably obtained by reacting an alkyl hydroperoxide of formula II prepared by treating 1,1,2,2-tetramethylpropyl alcohol with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide and concentrated sulfuric acid with an acid chloride of formula III (e.g. pivaloyl chloride) in the presence of a basic catalyst such as an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide in an organic solvent such as benzene by keeping the reactional temperature at 20°C, then washing the reactional mixture with water until the obtained organic layer becomes neutral and carrying out the dehydration, etc., of the neutralized organic layer with anhydrous sodium sulfate.
