PURPOSE: To provide the title novel compound useful as a material for low- viscosity liquid crystals of high light stability.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound of formula I (A1-A4 are each trans-1,4- disubstituted cyclohexylene, 1,4-disubstituted phenylene, etc.; Y1 and Y2 are each COO, OCO, C≡C, CH2CH2, CH=CH, CH2O, etc.; m and n are each 0 or 1; R1 and R2 are each 1-10C alkyl, halogen, cyan, etc.), e.g. 1,2-difluoro-1,2- bis[4-trans(4'-n-propylcyclohexyl)phenyl]ethane. The present compound can be obtained by reaction of a stilbene derivative of formula III. with iodine fluoride into a iodine fluoride adduct, which is then further reacted with iodine fluoride. Use of the present compound, even in a small quantity, in liquid crystal compositions will improve their responsiveness, enabling low-voltage driving, high-duty driving, broad temperature range actuation, etc.
