PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as a flame retardant, a thermal polymerization or a photopolymerization initiator, a radical former, a physiologically active substance, etc., and having carboxyl groups at both terminals.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I [R1 to R4 are H or 1-6C hydrocarbon residue; R5 and R6 are H or 1-10C hydrocarbon residue; (n) and (m) are 1-8], e.g. a compound of formula II. This compound is obtained by reacting a 1,2- diphenylethane compound of formula III (preferably 1,1,2,2-tetramethyl-1,2- diphenylethane, etc.) with a cyclic dicarboxylic acid anhydride (e.g. succinic anhydride) in the presence of a Lewis acid (e.g. AlBr3), preferably in an organic solvent such as hexane. Furthermore, the reaction is preferably carried out at 10-80°C for 0.5-5hr and the charging molar ratio of the 1,2-diphenylethane compound to the cyclic dicarboxylic acid anhydride is preferably 1:2.
