Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide 1,3-2,4-di(4-methylbenzylidene)sorbitol containing less than respective specific amounts of a specific sorbitol, total metal component and catalyst, having excellent thermal stability, useful as a clearing nucleation agent for PP and giving a PP resin composition satisfying the transparency, odorlessness and safety at the same time.

CONSTITUTION: The objective sorbitol derivative contains ≤2wt.% of 1,3-(2- methylbenzylidene)-1,4-(4-methylbenzylidene)sorbitol, ≤50ppm of total metal component (preferably Na, Fe and Ca) and ≤50ppm of a catalyst (preferably p-toluenesulfonic acid). The sorbitol derivative is produced e.g. by reacting sorbitol with 4-methylbenzaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst in an organic solvent, adding an alkaline aqueous solution to the obtained reaction mass and removing the solvent e.g. by distillation.
