NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (X is 1W10C alkyl, alkoxy, methylthio or cyano; Y is 1W10C alkyl or alkoxy).
EXAMPLE: 2-[4-(2-Pentyl-5-pyrimidinyl)phenyl]-5-pentylpyrimidine.
USE: A liquid crystal compound having high dielectric anisotropy and refractive index anisotropy, and excellent stability to heat, light, electricity, moisture, etc.
PREPARATION: A compound of formula I wherein X is alkyl or methylthio can be prepared by carrying out the condensation cyclization reaction of the compound of formula II with the compound of formula III in the presence of a basic catalyst, converting the Br of the resultant compound of formula IV to CN with CuCN, passing HCl and then ammonia gas through the reaction mixture, and subjecting the resultant amidine hydrochloride of formula IV to the condensation cyclization reaction with the compound of formula (CH3)2 NCH=C(Y)CHO in pyridine in the presence of a basic catalyst.
