NEW MATERIAL:1,6,6-Trimethyl-3-(1-hydroxy-ethyl)-2-oxa-bicyclo[4,3,0]non- 4-en-8-one.
USE: Agent for improving taste and flavor of tobacco.
PROCESS: The compound I is prepared by extracting leaves of tobacco belonging to Barley species with dichloromethane, separating volatile neutral cmponent from the extract by steam distillation, and subjecting the separated neutral component to silica gel column chromatography and preparative gas chromatography. Or the compound I can be synthesized by the follwing processes: isophorone II is oxidized with air; catalytically reduced with zinc; converted to ketal; made to react with but-3-yn-2-ol to afford a compound III; hydrolyzed; acetylated; dehydrated and deacetylated at tert-alcohol group; converted to ketal; reduced with Li[A1H4]; hyydrolyazed to the compound IV; epoxidized; and cyclized with dilute sulfuric acid.
