Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL: Compounds of formula I [R is H, methyl, ethyl; (substituted) monocyclic aryl; R', R", R"' are each H, methyl].
EXAMPLE: 17 β-(phenylcarbonyl)-4-aza-4-methyl-5α-androst-1-ene3-one.
USE: Inhibitor of testosterone-5 α reductase.
PROCESS: A steroid of formula II is dehydrogenated to produce a corresponding compd. having a double bond in the 1,2-positions of A ring. Then alkylation of the A ring nitrogen is performed to convert the 17-carbomethoxy to a 17 β-acyl, and if desired, introducing a 4-methyl or 4-ethyl group into A ring.
