PURPOSE: To obtain a novel colorless compound useful as a high-response liquid crystal material, especially a light switching element for display, having excellent chemical stability.
CONSTITUTION: A compound shown by formula I (R1 is 1-18C alkyl; R2 is 1-18C alkyl; X is O, COO or single bond; m is 0 or 1; ring A is 1,4-phenylene, trans-1,4- cyclohexylene; n is 1 or 2; C* and C** are asymmetric C in R or S configuration, respectively) such as (2S,4S)-4-fluoro-2-[44-hexyloxyphenyl)phenyl]decanenitrile. The compound shown by formula I is obtained by reacting a compound shown by formula II with an optically active epoxy compound shown by formula III in the presence of a storing base (e.g. butyllithium) to give an optically active 2-(4-substituted phenyl)-4-hydroxyalkane=tolyl derivative shown by formula IV and then treating this compound with a fluorinating agent.
