Abstract:
The novel compound, 2-ethyl-3 -methyl-pent-4-en-1-al of the formula may be prepared by a process comprising: splitting n-butyraldehyde- dicrotylacetal in the presence of an acid catalyst to form crotyl-1-butenyl ether; and thermally rearranging the ether to the form 2-ethyl-3-methyl-pent-4-en- 1-al. 2-ethyl-3-methyl-pent-4-en-1- al has a characteristic odour and is suitable for use in perfumes and as a chemical intermediate for compounds which can otherwise be prepared only via expensive and time-consuming synthesis.
