Abstract:
To provide: 2,6-dimethylphenol derived from a renewable raw material which, while having a low environmental load and being sustainable, has the same level of polymerization activity as a fossil resource-derived 2,6-dimethylphenol; and polyphenylene ether which is an oxidation polymer of the same.SOLUTION: The 2,6-dimethylphenol of the present invention is one obtained by a reaction of phenol and methanol, where at least one of phenol and methanol includes a renewable raw material. Further, the polyphenylene ether of the present invention is characterized in that it is one obtained by oxidative polymerization of 2,6-dimethylphenol synthesized from a renewable raw material.SELECTED DRAWING: None
