Abstract:

To provide a novel compound that is useful as an ultraviolet absorber.

This compound is represented by formula I (R1 is H, a halogen, a 1-12C alkyl or the like; R2 and R3 are each H, a halogen, a 1-4C alkyl or the like), typically 2-(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)benzotriazole. The compound of the formula I is prepared by nitrating a compound of formula II as 2-(2- hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)benzotriazole with a nitrating agent as nitric acid of 5-40 wt.% concentration, preferably at 30-60°C, catalytically hydrogenating the resultant nitro group to amino group over a catalyst as Raney nickel. This novel compound has a strong and sharp absorption in the wavelength range from 320 to 330 nm that has been regarded as to be most harmful light in the sunbeam.
