NEW MATERIAL: A compound of formula I (wherein R1 is amino or CH3; and R2 is an alkylthio, an alkylamino or a dialkylamino, provided that the case in which R1 is amino, and R2 is methylthio is excluded).
EXAMPLE: 4-Amino-6-(1,1-dichloro-2-methyl-2-propyl)-3-methylamino-1,2,4-triazin-5(4 H)one.
USE: A herbicide. Has selective herbicidal activity, and in the form of a mixture with a spreader or a surfactant, and controls weeds by applying to weeds or the environment.
PREPARATION: A compound of formula II is alkylated with an alkyl halide in an alkaline solution to obtain a compound of formula I (wherein R2 is desirably a 1-4C alkylthio). This is reacted with an amine of formula III (wherein R4 is H, desirably a 1-4C alkyl; and R6 is the same as R4 except when R4 is H) in the presence of a diluent and a lower-aliphatic carboxylic acid to obtain a compound of formula I (wherein R2 is other than an alkylthio).
