Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL: A compd. of formula I [wherein R1 is a 1-4C alkyl; R3 is H, a 1-4C alkyl, an acyl or an aryl; R5 is H or a 1-4C alkyl; x is O, CH2 or NR4 (wherein R4 is H or a 1-4C alkyl); and Y is an arom. or non-arom. ring system which contains 1-2 heteroatoms and may be substd.], their stereoisomers and their mixtures.

EXAMPLE: 4-(2,3'-Dimethoxy-5-biphenyl)-pyrrolidine-2-one.

USE: Remedies of mental diseases. They exhibit no anticholin-ergic side effect and little side effect to the stomach and intestines.

PROCESS: A compd. of formula II (wherein R6 is a leaving group) is reacted with Y-boron, Y-tin or Y-zinc-compd. or a cycloalkene in the presence of a palladium catalyst to obtain a compd. of formula I.
