PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound excellent in liquid crystal properties, capable of being easily produced industrially, extremely chemically stable, and in addition, capable of giving a liquid crystal composition without damaging an electro-optical characteristic and without precipitating crystals even at a low temperature on adding it to the base liquid crystal.
CONSTITUTION: This compound is represented by formula I (R1 is a 1-12C alkyl; n is 1, 2; X1 to X5 are each H or F; Y is -CH2CH2-, a single bond, etc.; Z is H, Cl, etc.; the cyclohexane ring has a trans-configuration), e.g. 2,6,3',4'- tetrafluoro-4-[2-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)propyl]biphenyl. For example, the compound of the formula I having Y as a single bond is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with a compound of formula III (either one of L or M is a halogen and the other one is a halogen, -Li, etc.) in the presence of a palladium(O) complex, etc. As the compound of formula II is e.g. 2,6- difluoro-4-[2-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)propyl]phenyl borate is cited.
