Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound having small dielectric anisotropy, broad liquid crystal phase temperature range, low driving voltage and excellent chemical stability, compatibility and voltage-keeping ratio and useful as liquid crystal material for active matrix display, etc.

CONSTITUTION: The compound of formula I (R1 is 1-10C straight-chain alkyl or straight-chain alkenyl; L and M are single bond or CH2CH2; R2 is 2-20C straight-chain alkyl), e.g. 1-[trans-4-(trans-4-propylcyclohexyl)cyclohexyl]-3,5- difluoro-4-butylbenzene. The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by hydrogenating a compound of formula III (Ra is H or 1-5C straight-chain alkyl) derived from a compound of formula II (R3 is H or 1-18C straight-chain alkyl) as a starting raw material.
