Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL:4-Fluoro-4'-hydroxybiphenyl benzoic acid ester derivative of formulaI[X is R (R is 1W10C alkyl), RO or group of formula II)].
EXAMPLE: 4'-Fluoro-4"-biphenylyl 4-ethylbenzoate.
USE: A component of a liquid crystal composition. Useful as a constituent component of a liquid crystal composition having broad liquid crystal temperature range.
PROCESS: The compound of formulaIis prepared by (1) reacting the 4-substituted benzoic acid of formula III with thionyl chloride, and (2) reacting the resultant acid chloride of formula IV with 4-fluoro-4'-hydroxybiphenyl of formula V in toluene in the presence of pyridine.
