Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit the early polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer mixture in the production process by mixing the monomer mixture with an effective amount of a 7-arylquinonemethide compound.
SOLUTION: This mixture comprises an ethylenically unsaturated monomer or a mixture thereof (a) with another monomer (e.g. aromatic vinyl compound) and a compound (b1) (e.g. 3,5-di-t-butyl-4-oxycyclohexa-2,5-dienylideneacetonitrile) represented by formula I (wherein R1 and R2 are each a 4-18C alkyl, a 5-12C cycloalkyl or a 7-15C phenylalkyl; and R3 is CN, COOH or the like) and a quinonemethide compound (b1) (b) (e.g. 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-benzylidenecyclohexa-2,5- dienone) represented by formula II (wherein E1 and E2 are each a 4-18C alkyl, a 5-12C cycloalkyl or a 7-15C phenylalkyl; and E3 is an aryl substituted with e.g. 2-pyridyl or the like). The amount of (b) is 1-2,000ppm based on the amount of (a), the amount of (b1) is 5-95wt.% based on the amount of (b), and the amount of (b2) is 95-5wt.%.
