To obtain a new compound useful as an additive for functional materials or as the precursor of the additive.
A compound of formula I [R1-R8 are each H, F, Cl, hydroxy, an alkoxy, an alkyl (a case wherein all of R1-R8 are H, respectively, is excluded); R9-R12 are each Cl]. For example, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octafluoro-9,9,10,10- tetrachloro-9,10-dihydroanthracene. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting an anthracene compound of formula II (preferably 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8- octafluoroanthraquinone) with phosphorus pentachloride and/or a compound of formula III (R is a monovalent organic group) at a temperature of 120-170°C for 2-3 hr. The phosphorus pentachloride and the compound of formula III are used in amounts of 2-5 moles and 5-10 moles, respectively, per mole of the anthraquinone compound. The phosphorus pentachloride and the compound of formula III are preferably simultaneously used.
