PURPOSE: To obtain an absorbent of excellent strength and clarification property by combining calcium sulfate, calcium hydroxide, active carbon, amorphous carbon and hydroxide or alkaline salt of sodium or potassium in a specified ratio.
CONSTITUTION: Calcium sulfate, calcium hydroxide, active carbon, hydroxide or alkaline salt of sodium or potassium and a water soluble cellulose derivative such as methyl cellulose are kneaded with water. At that time, mole ratio of Na or K to SO4 in this compound is specified to be 0.05W0.5. Then this compound is heat treated at about 300W500°C in a non-oxidizing atmosphere after being formed into a specified shape and the cellulose derivative is carbonized. When nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide are brought into contact with the surface of this absorbent, K or Na serves as a fixative and catalyst, the nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide diffuse through pores and fine pores derived from carbon and react with calcium hydroxide. An excellent absorbent is thus obtained.
