PURPOSE: To alleviate local concentration of an electric field on the edges of electrodes so as to prevent sputtering to insulator layers for covering the electrodes by thickly forming only the insulator layer at the edges of the electrodes out of the surface electric discharging electrodes.
CONSTITUTION: Transparent scanning electrodes 2 and maintaining electrodes 3 which are covered with an insulator layer 4 capable of transmitting visible light, and including mainly glass having a low melting point are alternately arranged in a stripe shape on a front glass substrate 1. On the edges of the electrodes 2, 3 printed thickly an insulator thin film is printed thickly 6. Black partition walls containing mainly alumina, glass having a low melting point and the like are printed in a thick film on the insulator layer 4, to be arranged in such a manner as to form electric discharging cells. A writing electrode 8 is formed of an aluminum thin film on a back glass substrate 7 in a stripe shape perpendicularly to the scanning electrodes 2 and the maintaining electrodes 3, to be covered with an insulator layer 9 capable of excellently reflecting visible light, and including mainly glass having a low melting point and TiO2. White partition walls 10 including mainly alumina and glass having a low melting point are printed in a thick film on the insulator layer 9, to be arranged in such a manner as to form electric discharging cells. A phosphor 11 is printed on the inside and bottom of the walls 10. The substrates 1, 7 are combined, and the surroundings thereof are sealed by frit glass, followed by filling with He-Xe.
