PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as a herbicide, especially one for weeds in paddy fields.
CONSTITUTION: A compound shown by formula I (R1 IS H, 1-5C alkyl, 1-5C alkenyl, etc.; R2 and R3 are H or 1-3C alkyl; Ar is phenyl, furyl or thienyl; X is halogen; Y is iso-propyl, tert-butyl, halogen-substituted 1-2C alkyl, etc.) such as 2-methyl-2-phenylpropionic acid (3-chloro-4-trifluoromethyl)anilide. The compound shown by formula I is obtained by reacting a compound shown by formula II with a compound shown by formula III (hal is Cl, Br or I)in a solvent (e.g. toluene) in the presence of an acid binder (e.g. triethylamine) at -10 to 20°C. The compound is effective against green amaranth, smooth pigweed, Polygonum Blumei Meisn., common purslane, Deccan grass, etc.
