To industrially synthesize an acrylic monomer contg. a malonate group for producing an acrylic polymer having active ethylene groups capable of crosslinking by Michael reaction.
An easily available dialkyl malonate and a hydroxyalkyl (meth) acrylate or a polyalkylene glycol mono(meth)acrylate are brought into the transesterification to synthesize the objective acrylic monomer having a malonate group represented by the formula, where R1 is H or methyl, R2 is 2-6C alkylene, R3 is 1-10C alkyl, (n) is an integer of 1-10, and when R1 is methyl, R2 is ethylene and (n) is 1, R3 is not methyl. The reaction is carried out by using the excess malonic diester, heating the starting compds. in the presence of a polymn. inhibitor and a catalyst, being kept blowing gas and removing alcohol produced as a by-product from the system during the reaction.
