PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active matrix element allowing an area to be enlarged, permitting a high-speed response, and substituting for a semiconductor switch.
SOLUTION: In an active matrix element 35 provided with scanning signal electrodes 25 and data signal electrodes 16 in a matrix form, and provided with at least one matrix driving means and an optical function element driven by the matrix driving means at each intersection of the matrix, a mechanical conductive switch 33 operated by an electrostatic force is adopted as the matrix driving means. The mechanical conductive switch 33 is composed of a flexible thin film 23 flexed by a static electricity stress, a conductive film 29 on the flexible thin film 23, a data signal electrode 16, and a pixel electrode 27a of the optical function element, and is structured so that the conducting film 29 comes in contact with the data signal electrode 16 and pixel electrode 27 by flexion of the flexible thin film 23.
