PURPOSE: To improve the symmetry of the accumulated charge characteristic at the time of impressing positive and negative voltage in the active matrix substrate having two-terminal nonlinear elements.
CONSTITUTION: Plural signal lines 2 are disposed on an insulating substrate 1 and plural pixel electrodes 9 are disposed between the respective signal lines in the stretching direction of the signal lines 2. Plural switching elements 11 are provided on the respective signal lines 2. These switching elements 11 are connected in one-to-one correspondence to the respective pixel electrodes. Each of the switching elements 11 has the three-layered structure laminated with a first insulating layer 3a, a semiconductor layer 4 and a second insulating layer 3b in this order. These switching elements are proven by experiment to have the good accumulated charge characteristic and to exhibit the current- voltage characteristics symmetrical with the positive and negative data voltages. The symmetrical voltages are thus impressed to liquid crystals.
