NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are H or 1W9C hydrocarbon residue: R3 is 2W7C saturated hydrocarbon residue).
EXAMPLE: Spiro[1,3-dioxolane-2,2'-(5'-acetyl-norbornanone)].
USE: A useful perfuming component for a perfume composition.
PROCESS: A compound of formula II is reacted with a mercuric slat, e.g. mercuric acetate, in a solvent, e.g. water or THF, at 5W130°C to add the mercuric salt to the unsaturated bond. The reaction product is then subjected to the reductive mercury removal and hydrolysis to give a compound of formula III. The reaction temperature is 0W50°C. The resultant compound of formula III is then oxidized, e.g. the Oppenauer oxidation, in a neutral or basic atmosphere not to decompose the acetal bond and give the compound of formula I.
