Abstract:

To prepare high molecular weight polymers represented by a specific formula with high purity by the addition reaction of a specific oligomer with a bisimidazoline under specific conditions.

An oligomer of formula I and an imidazoline of formula II are subjected to a bulk addition reaction at a temperature of higher than the melting point of the oligomer under atmospheric pressure. This reaction is carried out at a temp. of 100-350°C in an inert atmosphere for 1-120 minutes such that the viscosity of the oligomer is rendered not higher than 500 Pa.s in order to disperse chain coupled molecules into the oligomer to be mixed or solubilized therein. Polymers and copolymers containing repeating units of formula III (wherein R is a single bond or a linear hydrocarbon chain; R' is a (substituted) aliphatic hydrocarbon chain having at least two or three carbon atoms which connects the adjacent two -NH groups) can be obtained. Heretofore, to obtain high molecular weight polymers, the reaction has to be operated for a very long period of time and, simultaneously, at high temperatures under reduced pressure, and there has been a danger of deterioration by secondary reactions but this can be prevented.
