To provide an additive for oils that contains neither a metal nor phosphorus and can impart both friction reducing properties and wear reducing properties to oils such as a lubricating base oil and the like and to provide a lubricating oil containing the additive for oils.
Use is made of an additive for oils comprising an ester represented by formula (I), wherein R1 and R2 each independently denotes a hydrocarbyl or the like; a and b each independently denotes an integer of 0-5; X and Y each independently denotes a sulfur atom or a single bond; W and Z each independently denotes a hydrogen atom, -NR3R4 or the like, provided that both W and Z are not a hydrogen atom at the same time and in the case where either one of W and Z is a hydrogen atom, both X and Y are not a single bond at the same time; and R3 and R4 each independently denotes a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbyl or the like.
