PURPOSE: To obtain an agent having a high ability to align a liquid crystal and can give a liquid crystal cell suppressed in the buildup of charges when a voltage is applied thereto by using a polymer obtained by reacting a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and a specified diamine.
CONSTITUTION: This agent comprises a polymer obtained by reacting a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride of formula I (wherein R1 is a tetravalent organic group) with a diamine containing a compound of formula II (wherein (n) is 2-10) and/or its imide. This agent can give an aligned liquid crystal film desirable especially as a TN-type liquid crystal display element. A liquid crystal display element containing the liquid crystal film formed by using this agent is desirably used as SBE, SH or a ferroelectric display element. The liquid crystal display element can be used as, e.g. a display of, for example, a desk calculator, a wrist watch, a clock, a count display, a word processor, a personal computer or a liquid crystal television.
