To obtain an agent having antibacterial activity and collagenase inhibiting action and effective for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria, especially periodontal infectious diseases.
This agent contains a phenazine-5,10-dioxide compound of the formula (R1 to R8 are each H, NH2, a 1-12C alkyl, a lower alkoxy, a lower alkylamino, OH, Cl, Br, F or I; two of R1 to R4 may be bonded with each other through an aminoalkylene chain; the compound of the formula is not 2,3-dihydroxyphenazine-5,10-dioxide) or its salt as an active component. The compound of the formula has antibacterial activity against Gram-negative obligatory anaerobic bacteria or facultative anaerobic bacteria and exhibits inhibiting action on collagenase released from Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria and host tissue. The agent is used for the systemic treatment by injection or oral administration or the local treatment in the form of mouth rinsing solution, gingiva coating agent, sublingual paste, dentifrice or sustained release oral troche. The application amount of the agent for adult is 0.001-1g per dose for systemic use.
