PURPOSE: To obtain the title fiber having cleaning action on contaminated air, body smell, exhaust gas, toxic gas, etc., by providing porous fibers with a reaction product of metal and ascorbic acid and/or hydroxy polybasic acid and a basic substance.
CONSTITUTION: For example, metal powder (e.g. Fe, Mn, Al or Zn) or mixed powder of the metal powder and a thermoplastic polymer (e.g. polyethylene or polystyrene) is fed to a core side and a mixture of nylon-6, NaCl and MgCl2 is fed to a sheath side by using a sheath-core conjugate spinning machine to give sheath-core conjugate fibers, which are washed with water to dissolve NaCl, MgCl2, etc., of the sheath part, the sheath part is made porous and the fibers are immersed in a solution having dissolved ascorbic acid and/or hydroxy polybasic acid (e.g. citric acid or gluconic acid) and dried to give air cleaning fibers of double structure. Or, the air cleaning fibers of double layer structure consisting of the core part composed of natural fibers, glass fibers or synthetic fibers and the sheath part composed of the mixture is obtained.
